What Places Can You Visit in the Sacred Valley of the Incas?

Discover traditional towns, breathtaking landscapes, Inca ruins, and unique cultural experiences in one of Peru’s most extraordinary regions.

Highlights of the Sacred Valley

Here are the top destinations in the Sacred Valley of the Incas that you shouldn’t miss during your trip.

Pisac

Pisac, located in the heart of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, is one of the most fascinating destinations near Cusco. This picturesque Andean town blends history, living culture, stunning landscapes, and a mystical atmosphere, making it a must-visit stop for travelers exploring the depths of Peru.

Maras Salt Mines

The Maras Salt Mines are a set of more than 3,000 salt ponds fed by an underground spring rich in saline minerals. These pools have been used since pre-Inca times and are still managed by local families today. The striking contrast of the white ponds against the mountain backdrop creates one of the most photogenic landscapes in Cusco.

Moray

Visiting Moray means stepping into one of the most enigmatic and impressive sites in the Sacred Valley. Located at about 3,500 meters above sea level, this archaeological wonder features massive concentric circular terraces forming a natural amphitheater. It was once an Inca agricultural laboratory, where different microclimates were simulated for the cultivation of Andean crops.

Ollantaytambo

Ollantaytambo, also located in the Sacred Valley, is one of Peru’s most fascinating destinations thanks to its living history, intact Inca architecture, and stunning natural surroundings. A visit here feels like stepping back in time, as you walk along cobblestone streets that still preserve the original Inca layout.

Chinchero

Chinchero is about 28–29 km from Cusco, sitting at 3,762 meters above sea level and surrounded by snow-capped peaks such as Salkantay, Verónica, and Soray. Close to the Piuray and Huaypo lagoons, this town offers a deep connection with the Andes and Inca heritage. Well-preserved ruins, traditional weaving, breathtaking views, and authentic customs make it a highly recommended stop in the Sacred Valley.

Urubamba

Urubamba is one of the Sacred Valley’s most attractive destinations due to its natural beauty, mild climate, and strategic location. Surrounded by mountains and farmland, it’s perfect for travelers seeking an authentic cultural experience and a close connection with nature. Urubamba also serves as an excellent base to explore iconic sites such as Maras, Moray, and Ollantaytambo.
