How to Prepare for the Walk from Hidroelectrica to Machu Picchu

Reaching Machu Picchu through the Hidroelectrica route is one of the most affordable and adventurous alternatives to the train. I chose this path during my trip, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I made. However, like any adventure, it requires proper preparation. Here’s a complete guide with tips to get ready for this unforgettable hike.

What to Pack for the Hidroelectrica Hike

Although the trail from Hidroelectrica to Aguas Calientes is not physically demanding (it’s mostly flat and follows the railway tracks), it covers about 11 kilometers. Carrying the right essentials will make your experience more comfortable and safe.

Must-have items for your backpack:

  • At least 1.5 liters of water

  • Sunscreen

  • Mosquito repellent (very important)

  • Hat or cap

  • Sunglasses

  • Rain poncho or waterproof jacket (essential in the rainy season)

  • Comfortable walking shoes

  • Light snacks (fruit, energy bars)

  • Flashlight in case it gets dark

  • ID and your Machu Picchu entrance

Best Time to Start the Hike

I arrived at Hidroelectrica around 1:30 p.m. after the bus ride from Cusco and started the hike at 2:30 p.m. This was the perfect time — the sun wasn’t as strong, the weather was cooler, and there was still enough daylight to reach Aguas Calientes comfortably. I arrived just before 5:30 p.m.

If possible, avoid starting the walk too late to ensure you enjoy the route with daylight and in safe conditions.

Weather Conditions on the Route

The climate varies depending on the season:

  • Dry season (April – October): Warm during the day, with plenty of sunshine and cooler afternoons.

  • Rainy season (November – March): Expect wet and humid conditions, muddy trails, and occasional showers.

I traveled in May, and the weather was ideal — sunny skies, fresh breezes, and no rain.

Enjoy the Journey

One of the highlights of this route is its scenery. The trail is surrounded by lush vegetation, colorful birds, butterflies, the constant sound of the Urubamba River, and even hidden Inca ruins along the way. Take your time and enjoy the journey — this hike is not just about reaching Machu Picchu but also about experiencing nature up close.

Final Tips for Your Hike

  • A guide is not necessary, but pay attention to the route.

  • For travelers with children or seniors, make sure they are comfortable walking for nearly 3 hours.

  • Restrooms and small restaurants are available at Hidroelectrica station, but there are no services along the trail.

  • Carry cash in Peruvian soles in case you want to buy something along the way or need to take the train in an emergency.

Conclusion

The hike from Hidroelectrica to Machu Picchu is more than just a budget-friendly option — it’s an unforgettable adventure. With the right preparation, you’ll enjoy every step surrounded by nature and history. If you love hiking, stunning landscapes, and traveling on a budget, this route is perfect for you.

Would I do it again? Absolutely.
