Classic Salkantay Trek • 4 Days / 3 Noches • Adventure, Glaciers & Cloud Forest
We will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at 5:00 AM to begin a scenic 4-hour drive to Challacancha, passing through the towns of Anta and Mollepata (technical stop for restrooms and an optional breakfast). Along the way, the majestic Salkantay and Humantay snow-capped peaks come into view.
Arrival at the starting point to meet the trekking crew. We begin a 3-hour hike (7 km) toward the base camp at 3,850 m.a.s.l., walking through beautiful Andean landscapes and sections of an ancient Inca aqueduct still used by local communities.
Arrival at our first campsite in Soraypampa to enjoy a restorative lunch with stunning, front-row views of the glacial mountains. A short rest follows to facilitate acclimatization ahead of our afternoon hike.
An afternoon hike to the iconic Humantay Lake (4,200 m.a.s.l.). This demanding 5 km round-trip rewards you with brilliant turquoise waters set against a towering glacial backdrop. Perfect time for photos and connecting with nature.
Return to camp to witness the sunset. With zero light pollution, we will enjoy a magnificent starry night over the Andes before dinner and getting some rest inside our Andean huts.
We wake up with the first light of day to enjoy a nutritious high-mountain breakfast, vital for tackling the most demanding day of the entire expedition.
We begin a 7 km (3 hours) uphill trek through rocky valleys to the highest point of the circuit: the Salkantay Pass (4,650 m.a.s.l. / 15,255 ft). The imposing silhouette of Mt. Salkantay (6,271 m.a.s.l. / 20,574 ft) dominates the horizon alongside the Humantay, Tucarhuay, and Pumasillo peaks.
The ultimate moment at the mountain pass to admire the majesty of one of the most revered "Apus" (mountain spirits) in Inca cosmology. A mystical and spiritual space perfect for reflection and unforgettable group photographs.
We descend 5 km down a winding gravel trail to Huayracmachay (Wayracpunku), where we pause to enjoy a well-deserved, comforting lunch with panoramic views of the mountain range.
In the afternoon, the environment changes dramatically. We descend for 10 km (approx. 3 hours) as we enter the high Amazon jungle. The climate turns warm and humid, and the trail fills with lush vegetation, waterfalls, and endemic wildlife. We finish the day at the Chaullay campsite (2,900 m.a.s.l. / 9,514 ft) for dinner and rest.
We start the day with an energetic breakfast before embarking on a 6-hour trek through the lush Santa Teresa Valley. We will immerse ourselves in the beauty of the cloud forest, encountering rivers, waterfalls, wild orchids, and local plantations of coffee, bananas, and avocados. You can taste fresh local fruits like passion fruit along the way. Rich biodiversity awaits in Colpapampa—with a bit of luck, we might spot the Peruvian Cock-of-the-rock!
Enjoy a comforting lunch at La Playa Sahuayaco. Afterward, we will take a local vehicle to the Hydroelectric station to begin the final approach segment of our journey.
From Hydroelectric, we hike for 3 hours (11 km) along the train tracks through a flat and picturesque cloud forest. This historic path, used by Hiram Bingham during his exploration, leads us directly to the base of the mountain.
Check-in at a comfortable hotel in Aguas Calientes (private room with a hot shower, private bathroom, and WiFi). Enjoy free time to explore the car-free town and artisanal markets. At 7:00 PM, we will gather for dinner at a local tourist restaurant to coordinate the details for tomorrow's big day. Free luggage storage is available at the hotel for your visit.
We wake up very early to head to the main entrance of the Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary (opens at 06:00 AM) to experience the mystical morning light without the crowds. You can choose to hike up or take the Consettur shuttle buses ($14 USD each way) to reach the entrance.
A 2-hour guided tour through the primary sectors of the Inca Citadel: sacred temples, royal palaces, agricultural terraces, residential quarters, and the solar clock (Intihuatana). Discover the historical secrets of this engineering masterpiece built in perfect harmony with nature.
Free time to explore the monument or embark on pre-booked additional hikes (Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, approx. 3 hours round trip). You can also walk to the Inca Bridge or sit back and take in the iconic views at no extra cost.
Following your marvelous visit, you must walk back along the railway route to the Hydroelectric station to board our return shuttle. Boarding begins promptly at 2:30 PM, and the bus departs strictly at 3:00 PM, arriving back in Cusco at approximately 10:00 PM.
If your booking features the budget-friendly return by bus, advanced planning is vital. The agency will strictly schedule your Machu Picchu entry ticket **only between the 07:00 AM and 09:00 AM shifts**. This is a mandatory operational requirement to guarantee you have sufficient time to complete your guided tour, walk back down, and hike the 3 hours back to the Hydroelectric station before 2:30 PM, when the vehicles depart punctually to Cusco without delay.
* Please Note: Travelers who upgrade to the return train option face no time restrictions regarding their entry times to the archaeological monument.
