Exclusive Salkantay Trek • 5 Days / 4 Nights • Adventure, Glaciers & Jungle
We pick you up from your accommodation in Cusco to begin a scenic 4-hour drive to Challacancha, passing through the towns of Anta and Mollepata (technical stop for restrooms and an optional breakfast). Along the way, enjoy panoramic views of the majestic peaks of Apu Salkantay and Humantay.
Upon arrival at Challacancha, we meet our team of horsemen and support staff. We begin a 3-hour hike (7 km) toward the base camp, traversing beautiful Andean landscapes and sections of an ancient Inca aqueduct still used by local communities.
Arrive at our first campsite in Soraypampa (3,850 m / 12,631 ft) to enjoy a freshly prepared hot lunch by our chef, complete with front-row views of the glacial mountains. Enjoy a brief rest to assist with acclimatization.
An afternoon hike takes us up to the iconic Humantay Lake (4,200 m / 13,779 ft). This challenging 5 km round-trip rewards you with vibrant, crystal-clear turquoise waters beneath an imposing glacial backdrop. Plenty of time for photos and connecting with nature.
Return to camp to witness a peaceful mountain sunset. Free from light pollution, we will enjoy a magnificent star-filled sky over the Andes before having dinner and resting in our Andean huts or tents.
We wake up at first light for a nutritious high-mountain breakfast, essential for tackling the most demanding day of the entire expedition.
We begin a 7 km (3-hour) uphill hike through rocky glacial valleys to the highest point of the trail: the Salkantay Pass (4,650 m / 15,255 ft). The massive silhouette of Apu Salkantay (6,271 m / 20,574 ft) dominates the horizon alongside Humantay and Pumasillo peaks.
A triumphant pause at the mountain pass to admire one of the most revered sacred peaks ("Apus") in Inca mythology. A perfect time for reflection, group photos, and traditional cultural offerings.
We descend 5 km down a winding gravel path to Huayracmachay, where we will stop to enjoy a well-deserved buffet lunch accompanied by sweeping panoramic views of the mountain range.
In the afternoon, the surroundings transform dramatically. We descend for 10 km (approx. 3 hours), entering the high Amazonian jungle or cloud forest. The weather turns warm and humid as the trail fills with lush vegetation, waterfalls, and native wildlife.
Arrive at the settlement of Chaullay (2,900 m / 9,514 ft), a campsite nestled deep within the high tropical rainforest. Time to unwind, have a warm dinner, and recharge after an epic day of trekking.
Wake up to the sounds of exotic birds and a hot cup of coca tea delivered right to your tent, followed by a nutritious, replenishing breakfast.
We begin a scenic 5-hour trek through the region's dense flora. The trail leads us past local organic coffee plantations, coca leaves, bananas, avocados, and passion fruit, completely immersing us in local agricultural life.
Arrive at our third campsite in the community of Lucmabamba. Here we will enjoy a lunch freshly prepared from locally sourced ingredients and get settled into the campground.
If you wish, you can take an optional 1.5-hour transport to the famous Cocalmayo Hot Springs. Relax in large, natural thermal pools right at the foot of the mountains. In the evening, we return for dinner and a cozy bonfire under the starry jungle sky.
An early Andean breakfast at camp sets us up for one of the most visually stunning segments of the entire journey.
We hike uphill for 3 hours along an original section of the royal Inca trail network (Qhapaq Ñan) to the Llactapata archaeological ruins. From this unique viewpoint, you can spot the citadel of Machu Picchu, Huayna Picchu, and the Vilcanota canyon from an extraordinary angle.
We undertake a 2-hour downhill hike to Hidroeléctrica station to rest and enjoy a re-energizing lunch along the route.
The final stretch of the day involves an 11 km (3-hour) flat walk alongside the railway tracks. This peaceful path is surrounded by dense tropical greenery and leads directly to the town at the base of Machu Picchu.
Check in to your hotel in Aguas Calientes. At 19:00, we gather at a local tourist restaurant for a group dinner and to outline the briefing and schedule for entry to the Inca citadel the following morning.
We rise early to head up to the main gate of the Historic Sanctuary (gates open at 06:00 AM). You can choose to hike up or take the Consettur shuttle bus ($12 USD each way) to reach the entrance.
Enjoy a comprehensive 2-hour guided tour through the core areas of the Citadel: sacred temples, royal quarters, ceremonial squares, and the Intihuatana. Uncover the architectural and historical mysteries of this masterpiece of Inca engineering.
Free time for pre-booked mountain climbs (Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain). Alternatively, you can walk to the Inca Bridge or look out from the Sun Gate (Intipunku) at no extra cost.
If returning by bus: You must hike back down to Hidroeléctrica. Boarding begins at 14:30 and the transport departs punctually at 15:00, arriving in Cusco around 22:00 (Plaza Regocijo).
If returning by train: You will board your train in Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo, where our driver will meet you for the final minivan transfer to your hotel in Cusco.
If your tour package includes the economical return by bus, the agency will strictly book your Machu Picchu entry shift exclusively between 07:00 AM and 09:00 AM. This is a mandatory operational requirement to ensure you have sufficient time to complete your circuit tour, exit the park, and complete the 3-hour walk back to Central Hidroeléctrica before 14:30 PM. Buses depart punctually at 15:00 PM and cannot hold for delayed passengers.
* Note: Travelers booking the return train option do not have any timing constraints regarding their Machu Picchu entry shifts.
