What to see on the bus ride to Humantay Lake from Cusco?

The bus ride from Cusco to Humantay Lake is not just a connection between the city and the mountains—it’s a journey full of Andean landscapes, picturesque towns, and natural viewpoints that give you a preview of the extraordinary final destination. In this guide, we’ll tell you what you can see and enjoy along the way… and why you should experience it with us!

Early morning departure: Cusco still asleep

The trip starts around 4:30 a.m., when we pick up passengers from their accommodations in the historic center. While the city is still asleep, you can watch Cusco wake up: cobblestone streets, lights turning on, and the first movements of the day.

Mollepata: Andean breakfast and views of Salkantay

After about two hours on the road, we stop in Mollepata, a charming town surrounded by mountains. Here you can enjoy an optional Andean buffet breakfast while admiring the Salkantay snow-capped peak in the distance. It’s a perfect opportunity to take photos and recharge your energy!

Panoramic views of the Apurímac Valley

As the bus continues toward Soraypampa, the road winds through deep valleys offering stunning views of the Apurímac River and the Andean mountain range. From the bus windows, you’ll see mountains, queñua forests, and traditional agricultural terraces still in use today.

Soraypampa: start of the hiking adventure

The final stop is Soraypampa, over 3,900 meters (12,800 ft) above sea level. From here, the hike to the lake begins. But before starting, you can enjoy the spectacular scenery with views of Humantay and Salkantay, two of the giants of the Peruvian Andes.
