What to Bring on a Lake Titicaca Tour from Puno? Quick Guide to Remember the Essentials

To fully enjoy your experience, being prepared is key. Whether you’re spending a few hours at the Uros or staying overnight on Amantaní or Taquile, bringing the right items will make the difference between a comfortable trip or one full of unexpected problems.

Here’s what to pack for a tour from Puno to Lake Titicaca, depending on the duration and type of tour.

Appropriate Clothing for the Andean Climate

Even though the sun can be strong during the day, temperatures on the lake change quickly. Bring:

  • Windbreaker or light jacket

  • Layered clothing (t-shirts, fleeces, scarves)

  • Sun hat and wool hat for cold

  • Sunglasses and sunscreen (lake reflections are strong)

Important: There are no modern shops on the islands, so come prepared.

Light and Practical Backpack

Avoid large suitcases. For 1- or 2-day tours, a medium-sized backpack is best, with:

  • Reusable water bottle

  • Energy snacks

  • Toilet paper and hand sanitizer

  • Flashlight or headlamp (Amantaní has limited lighting at night)

  • Camera or phone with extra battery

Tip: If staying overnight, also pack a change of comfortable clothes for sleeping.

Cash in Peruvian Soles

Cards are not accepted on the islands, and there are no ATMs. Bring cash (suggested amount: S/40–S/80 approx) for:

  • Buying handicrafts

  • Tipping or contributing to the host family

  • Optional totora reed boat rides at the Uros

A small gift is also appreciated: pencils, notebooks, or toys for children.

What to Bring for Overnight Stays on Amantaní or Taquile

If you choose the overnight tour, we recommend bringing:

  • Flashlight or power bank (essential)

  • Thermal clothing for the night

  • Personal items (small towel, toothbrush, etc.)

  • Your own medications

  • Open mind and willing heart: the islands are living culture, not conventional tourism

Most Important: Attitude and Respect

Traveling to Lake Titicaca is more than seeing landscapes: it’s about connecting with communities that preserve ancestral traditions. Be kind, listen, give thanks, and show respect for their way of life.

Remember: It’s not a hotel; it’s a home.
