This Is What the Tourist Transportation Ride from Cusco to Humantay Lake Is Like

Traveling by bus from Cusco to the impressive Humantay Lake is one of the most exciting experiences you can have in the Peruvian Andes. But what is this journey really like? Here we tell you everything: from the early morning departure to your arrival at Soraypampa, the starting point of the hike.

Early departure from Cusco

The day begins very early, between 4:30 and 5:00 a.m., with pickup from your accommodation if you’re staying in Cusco’s historic center. This allows you to reach the lake before the crowds and enjoy the tranquility of the place.

Our tourist buses are authorized, comfortable, modern, and driven by trained staff. You’ll travel safely with the full support of a formal company!

Breakfast stop in Mollepata

After about two hours of travel, we stop in Mollepata, where you can enjoy an optional Andean buffet breakfast—perfect for recharging before the hike. This service is optional and can be added at the time of booking.

Scenic route to Soraypampa

The most impressive part of the bus ride is the final stretch to Soraypampa. The road, although dirt in some sections, offers spectacular views of snow-capped mountains, valleys, and ravines. Important details include:

  • The total trip from Cusco to Soraypampa takes approximately 3 to 3.5 hours

  • Our buses have air conditioning and reclining seats

  • The route is safe but includes curves; if you are sensitive to motion, bring motion sickness medication

Arrival at Soraypampa and hike to the lake

Upon arrival at Soraypampa (over 3,900 meters / 12,800 ft), the hike of approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to Humantay Lake begins. From this point, the bus is no longer used.

For those who do not wish to walk or have physical limitations, there is the option to rent horses with local guides (cost paid directly on-site).

Return bus trip to Cusco

After enjoying the lake and returning to Soraypampa, there is an optional buffet lunch before boarding the bus back to Cusco. The return usually departs between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., arriving in the city around 6:30 p.m.
