Weather in Hidroeléctrica All Year Round: What’s the Best Season to Visit Machu Picchu?

My Experience Traveling Through Hidroelectrica

When I decided to reach Machu Picchu via the alternative Hidroelectrica route, one of my biggest questions was: What’s the best time of year to go? After some research, I chose to travel in May, right at the beginning of the dry season — and it was the perfect decision.

The bus ride from Cusco to Hidroelectrica offered clear skies and lush green landscapes. Upon arrival, the climate was warm and humid, with temperatures between 18 °C and 24 °C (64 °F – 75 °F). It was ideal for starting the 11 km hike to Aguas Calientes without worrying about rain or muddy trails.

Travel tip: To enjoy the route with clear skies, minimal risk of landslides, and comfortable trekking conditions, plan your trip between April and October — especially from May to August, the driest months.

What Other Travelers Told Me About the Weather

During the hike, I met a couple of backpackers who had taken the route in January, right in the middle of the rainy season. They described the experience as both challenging and beautiful: the jungle was greener, rivers were more powerful, and the scenery was stunning. But they had to wear rain gear the entire way and walk along slippery sections of the trail.

They also mentioned that their bus from Cusco was delayed due to heavy rain and fog at Abra Málaga — a high-altitude pass where fog, hail, or even snow can occur during the wettest months.

Important to know: From November to March, it’s the rainy season. The Hidroelectrica route remains open, but it’s more suitable for experienced hikers or adventurous travelers willing to embrace unpredictable weather.

Conclusion: Best Season to Hike the Hidroelectrica Route

Based on both my own experience and what other travelers shared, the best time to hike from Hidroelectrica to Machu Picchu is during the dry season (April – October). You’ll enjoy safer conditions, clear landscapes, and great opportunities for photography.

That said, if you don’t mind getting wet and want to see the rainforest at its greenest and most vibrant, the rainy season (November – March) also offers its own adventurous charm.
